3rd T4EU Heritage Week in Trieste

Would you like to explore European heritage, memory, and artistic practices?

Members of the public are warmly invited to take part in selected events throughout the programme, offering a unique opportunity to engage with leading scholars, artists, museum professionals, and cultural practitioners from across Europe.

Join Mnemosyne – the 3rd T4EU Heritage Week, hosted by the University of Trieste from 21 to 23 October 2026.

Inspired by Aby Warburg’s reflections on the relationship between art and memory, this T4EU Heritage Week explores how Europe’s shared heritage is constructed, interpreted, and reimagined through critical memory studies and artistic methodologies. Bringing together scholars, artists, students, cultural institutions, and GLAM+ (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums, and related cultural heritage organisations) professionals, the programme promotes an interdisciplinary dialogue on participatory artistic practices and sustainable heritage.

The event is organised around two complementary initiatives:

  • Reframing Memories in Times of Crises – Regional Heritage Workshop (21–22 October), dedicated to examining how contemporary crises reshape remembrance practices and public narratives across Europe through historical and anthropological perspectives.
  • Art and Science as Participatory Practices – Regional Artistic Research Roundtable (23 October), exploring how artistic methodologies can strengthen interdisciplinary research, education, and public engagement.

Throughout the three-day programme, participants will attend keynote lectures and thematic panels, engage in discussions with museums and cultural institutions, take part in a participatory World Café, and exchange ideas with scholars, artists, researchers, and heritage professionals from across the T4EU Alliance. Topics will include contested memories, wars and forced migrations, border regions, authoritarian pasts, public memory, participatory artistic practices, and innovative approaches to heritage research and education.

We are pleased to welcome members of the public to the following events:

  • 21 OCTOBER
    • Who owns public memory? Between human rights and nationalism (welcome & introduction, keynote and discussion, 09:30-11:00)
    • The European dimension of memories and crisis (panel, 11:30-13:00)
    • European and regional museums in conversation: representations of conflictual memories (roundtable with GLAM+ partners, 17:00-19:00, simultaneous interpretation between English and Italian available)
  • 22 OCTOBER
    • The regional dimension of memories and crisis (panel, 10:00-11:30)
    • Nation, faith, and spaces of memory at the Risiera di San Sabba (keynote and discussion, 12:00-13:00)
  • 23 OCTOBER
    • Art and science as participatory practices (welcome and introduction, roundtable, 8:45-11:00, simultaneous interpretation between English and Italian available)

These events offer a chance to meet international guests, engage with current debates on heritage and memory, and experience innovative approaches to art, culture, and research in an open and accessible setting.

The Shape of Animal Thought: T4EU Science Café at Trieste Next 2026

On Sunday, 27 September 2026, the University of Trieste and the Transform4Europe Alliance will take part in Trieste Next – Festival of Scientific Research with the Science Café “The Shape of Animal Thought: From Cognition to Law.”

The event will bring together Cinzia Chiandetti, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Trieste, and Tomasz Pietrzykowski, Professor of Law at the University of Silesia in Katowice. The discussion will be chaired by Alberto Pallavicini, Professor of Genetics at the University of Trieste.

Recent decades have profoundly changed our understanding of animal minds. Research has revealed cognitive abilities ranging from spatial reasoning and numeracy to biologically rooted musical preferences, challenging traditional assumptions about the boundaries between human and non-human cognition.

These scientific discoveries also raise important legal and ethical questions. How should a deeper understanding of animal cognition reshape our relationship with non-human animals? Is the law ready to respond to what science is discovering?

The Science Café will explore the intersection between cognitive science and legal norms, bringing together different disciplinary perspectives and addressing topics ranging from comparative cognition to animal rights and the debate around non-human legal personhood.

Sunday, 27 September 2026 | 11:30–12:45
Area Talk 2 – Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste

The event is organised by the University of Trieste and the Transform4Europe European University Alliance within WP8 – Task 8.4.

Full details about the speakers and the event are available on the Trieste Next website.
